Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, DPVA Chair Susan Swecker, and Governor Terry McAuliffe Join 5th Congressional District Democratic Committee For Virtual Convention

The 5th Congressional District Democratic Committee held a virtual convention Saturday
morning to select delegates to the state and national conventions later this year. Over 100
participants from across the district joined the video call, which featured speeches from DPVA Chair Susan Swecker, House of Delegates Speaker Eileen Filler-Corn, and Governor Terry McAuliffe. Over 500 people joined virtual conventions across the Commonwealth this weekend in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 10th Congressional Districts.

“Adapting our delegate selection process to a time of social distancing wasn’t easy, but I’m
proud to say that our Congressional district committee has a full delegation of 160 delegates. I must say, there has been great participation all over this huge district. The success of this
convention, and of virtual conventions across the Commonwealth, is a clear sign that Virginia
Democrats are fired up, united, and ready to elect Joe Biden in November. After unprecedented turnout on Super Tuesday, we’re not going to let anything get in the way of our momentum, and I know that we’ll elect Democrats up and down the ballot later this year. Seeing the enthusiasm this weekend gives me hope that we’re not only ready to win the White House, but also flip the 5th Congressional District in November,” said 5th CD Chair Suzanne Long.

Virginia’s 11 Congressional District Democratic Committees will all hold virtual conventions
over the next few weeks, rallying Democrats across the Commonwealth ahead of larger
conventions this summer. The Democratic Party of Virginia has seen an unprecedented amount of enthusiasm this year, with over 2,300 people signing up to be delegates.

Virginia will send 124 delegates to the Democratic National Convention. Of them, 65 are allocated by congressional district and 34 are at-large. The Commonwealth also has 25 automatic delegates, or “superdelegates.”

There will be a Democratic Primary open to voters registered in Virginia Congressional District 05 on June 23, 2020, to elect the Democratic nominee to run in the General Election for US House of Representatives.
